The Epsom Derby is considered one of the most prestigious flat thoroughbred horse races in the world. The race takes place each year in June at Epsom Downs.
The Derby is run over a distance of 1 mile and 4 furlongs (1 1/2 miles or 2400 meters) for 3 year olds, each three year old colt carrying 9 stone (126 lbs). The race is the second leg of the English Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing, preceded by the Two Thousand Guineas Stakes and followed by the St. Leger Stakes.
